Spartans

The Spartans are the Elite Troops of the Empire, only second to the Emperors Own Praetorians. In the beginning of the Roman Empire the Spartans traditionally wore extremely little clothing, intimidating the enemy with their willingness to accept any loss in exchange for overall victory.

Over the centuries weapons technology advanced to the point where in pitched combat nakedness, was an unacceptable disadvantage for the Empires crack troops. This brought in a complete revision of the Spartans as they stood. With new technology a form of transparent flexible alloy was made which not only doubled as armor but as vacuum suits and a continuation of the Spartan tradition.

To further continue the Spartan tradition the Spartan InterLock Shielding was developed, A physical based energy shield that worked on the principle of reflecting the majority of energy based attacks with highly reflective nanolayered armor. The shield was able to gain more power by absorbing heat into a small onboard battery device and by receiving power from inactive shields. This meant that not only did incoming energy attacks power the shield to a small degree, but that the more Spartans in a formation the stronger their shielding would be.

Although attempts had been made to keep Spartan Tradition it had been realized that projectile weapons were a necessity for the troops. To keep the spears of yesteryear as much as possible it was finally decided that a two meter long weapon would be created. The weapon was originally a vibro-spear with a gun barrel attached but eventually evolved into a rifle with bio feedback for targeting and an a vibration module which would vibrate the long barrel at such a speed that anything that touched it would receive an inch wide cut. This suited the Spartans just fine and once again the Spartan formation became near untouchable as anyone who physically approached the formation was ripped apart by the ‘vibro-spears’ and those that did not dare to approach were destroyed at range by the high powered rifle.
